Conservative Restoration with Dental Inlays and Onlays
When a tooth suffers from moderate decay, a large fracture, or a failing old filling, a standard composite filling may not provide enough strength to restore it. However, the damage may not be severe enough to warrant grinding down the entire tooth for a full dental crown.
At Bright Whites Dental in Franconia, Alexandria, VA, we offer the perfect middle-ground solution: dental inlays and onlays. Often referred to as “indirect fillings,” these custom-made restorations are crafted from solid, durable materials like porcelain or composite resin. They are designed to fit perfectly into or over the damaged portion of your tooth, restoring its strength, function, and natural appearance while preserving as much of your healthy tooth structure as possible.

What is the Difference Between an Inlay and an Onlay?
Both inlays and onlays serve the same fundamental purpose—to repair a damaged tooth—but they are used depending on the extent and location of the damage.
The Benefits of Inlays and Onlays
Choosing an inlay or onlay at Bright Whites Dental offers several significant advantages for your long-term oral health:

The Inlay and Onlay Procedure
Getting an inlay or onlay typically requires two visits to our Alexandria, VA office.
- First Visit (Preparation): Dr. White or Dr. Lee will numb the area to ensure your comfort. We will then carefully remove the decay or old filling material and clean the tooth. Next, we take highly accurate digital or physical impressions of the prepared tooth. These impressions are sent to a specialized dental laboratory where your custom restoration will be crafted. Before you leave, we will place a temporary filling to protect your tooth.
- Second Visit (Placement): Once your custom inlay or onlay is ready (usually within a week or two), you will return to our office. We will remove the temporary filling and carefully check the fit, shape, and color of your new restoration. Once we ensure it fits perfectly and your bite is comfortable, we will permanently bond the inlay or onlay to your tooth using a strong dental resin, and polish it to a natural shine.
