Protect and Restore Your Teeth with Expert Cavity Fillings

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental issues, affecting patients of all ages. When bacteria in your mouth feed on sugars from your diet, they produce acids that slowly eat away at your tooth enamel, eventually creating a hole known as a cavity.

At Bright Whites Dental in Franconia, Alexandria, VA, we utilize advanced cavity detection technology to identify decay in its earliest stages. When a cavity is found, we provide safe, comfortable, and highly effective dental fillings to repair the damaged tooth structure, stop the decay from spreading, and restore the tooth to its full function and natural appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the early stages, cavities often have no symptoms at all, which is why routine dental exams are so important. As the decay progresses deeper into the tooth, you may experience symptoms such as a mild to sharp toothache, sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods, visible holes or dark pits in your teeth, or pain when biting down.

No, getting a filling should not hurt. We use highly effective local anesthesia to completely numb the tooth before we begin removing the decay. You may feel some pressure or vibration from the dental instruments, but you should not feel any sharp pain.

A standard filling procedure is quite fast. Depending on the size and location of the cavity, the entire process usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes per tooth.

With proper care, tooth-colored composite fillings are very durable and can last anywhere from 7 to 10 years, or even longer. To maximize the lifespan of your fillings, maintain excellent oral hygiene (brushing twice a day and flossing daily), avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or hard candies, and visit us for your regular check-ups.

Because we use a curing light to instantly harden the composite resin, the filling is fully set before you leave the chair. However, we strongly recommend waiting to eat until the local anesthesia has completely worn off (usually 1 to 3 hours). Eating while your mouth is numb can lead to accidentally biting your tongue, lips, or the inside of your cheek.

It is completely normal to experience some mild sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures for a few days to a couple of weeks after getting a filling. The tooth has undergone a minor surgical procedure and needs time to settle. If the sensitivity is severe, lasts longer than a few weeks, or if you feel a sharp pain when biting down, please contact our office, as the filling may need a minor bite adjustment.

Yes! Many patients choose to have their old, dark silver amalgam fillings replaced with natural-looking composite resin for aesthetic reasons or if the old fillings are beginning to break down or leak. We can evaluate your old fillings and discuss replacement options during your consultation.
